Miro Krajnc on SoulSonic

About the IMPULSE model:

  • It is best used in larger rooms, say above 370 ft², well away from the back wall (7 feet or more recommended, otherwise a special absorbers for the ribbons must be used - I can supply them, they must be attached on the back of the ribbons), the speakers must be positioned straight or with just slight toe-in, more or less equilateral triangle listening position is recommended for best results. Side wall distance isn't critical at all, or is even helpful.

  • Minimum power is 50 Watts, but more is of course better. One customer uses more than one kilowatt for the woofers and 600 watts for the ribbons, per channel, with great results. When IMPULSE woofers are thoroughly broken in, they sing in astonishing coherency with the ribbons, but this can take more than six months.

About the IMPACT model:
  • It was developed to overcome a few typical problems when used in smaller rooms.

  • The IMPACT model can be used in rooms of 170 ft² or more, the minimum distance from the back wall is 20 inches, measured from the back of the ribbon, the speakers must be positioned  straight, or appropriately toed-in, if listened very close, in the near field position (7 feet minimum). Side wall distance isn't critical at all, or is even helpful.

  • all speakers with vertically expanded low frequency drivers (cone or planar) exhibit an upper bass dip in smaller rooms, mostly in the range between 100 and 200 Hz. To avoid this dip, the IMPACT has two 12" woofers located near floor, angled slightly towards each other, which makes them much less susceptible to the negative influence of the room modes.

  • The shallow waveguide in front of the ribbon improves the efficiency and directionality of the ribbons, while enabling a symmetrical horizontal power response. Due to the shape of this waveguide, the reflections from the back wall are diffused upon reaching the back of the waveguide, which reduces the negative impact of the early reflections.

  • Minimum power is 50 Watts, but more is of course better.

All SoulSonic speakers offer transparency of the planars combined with the dynamics of the boxed or horn speakers, without their colorations, so I believe they will become the next big thing in audio.
