Onkyo has loaded up its latest "home theater in a box" (HTiB) with a panoply of features that should appeal to the most demanding technophile. The press announcement makes a big deal of the fact that this system, the HT-S9300THX, is 3D-Ready and THX® I/S Plus™ Certified (the I/S stands for Integrated System). They say that this is the first HTiB system to offer both.

The checklist of features in the HT-S9300THX goes on and on.

  • seven theater loudspeakers including a 12-inch subwoofer

  • four of the 3D-ready HDMI 1.4a inputs

  • lossless Dolby and DTS audio processing

  • Dolby ProLogic IIz height channel processing

  • Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction, Dynamic EQ, and Dynamic Volume processing

  • compatibility with both Side-By-Side and Top-and-Bottom 3-D broadcast formats

  • Faroujda DCDi Cinema processor for upscaling all video inputs 1080p video, regardless of native resolution

  • Onkyo's own Music Optimizer to help compressed music files sound better over loudspeaker playback with loudspeakers

  • HDMI Pass that lets sources use a TV's built in speakers with the receiver in standby mode. They say this is handy for children (and others) who want to watch and listen without dealing with the receiver's controls.

Did I mention a DVD or Blu-Ray player? No. There's not one of those in the box. I'm sure you can find one to make the system really complete.

The HT-S9300THX is available now with a suggested retail price of $1,099.
