Holly Cole: Not Smoking

The Holly Cole phenomenon is all but inexplicable.  Her modest talents are pleasant enough when presented with evident enthusiasm in a live performance.  So far her recordings have offered little of interest and yet they apparently sell handsomely.

Don't Smoke In Bed is a total mess.  Ridiculous programming ("The Tennessee Waltz," "I Can See Clearly Now") and limp interpretations ("Ev'rything I've Got," "Get Out of Town") abound, often appearing on the same track ("Don't Let the Teardrops Rust Your Shining Heart," "Que Sera Sera").  The only palatable performance on the disc is "Blame It On My Youth."  You can read what you want into that.

Finally, don't be overly impressed by the guest appearance of Joe Henderson on one track.  Lester Young got roped into waxing "Blitzkrieg Baby (You Can't Bomb Me)" with Una Mae Carlisle. Remember her?  Of course not.
